Dance Fitness and Zumba – How To Avoid Injuries
Zumba, zumba, zumba. Sure, it’s the latest fitness craze. As the craze keeps growing, some doctors fear the injuries as a result of Zumba will grow as well. While all those twists and turns in Zumba can be a fun way to slim down, those moves can also lead to injury. How can you enjoy Zumba while remaining injury free?
Choose a qualified Zumba Instructor
First, realize that while a great benefit of Zumba is the free style, go-at-your-own-pace dance moves, it’s still a form of exercise. As such, maintaining proper form is important. Another important aspect of remaining injury free while enjoying Zumba is to find an instructor who is experienced. New instructors are usually eager for new clients, but the reality is they may not be as equipped at demonstrating proper form. A qualified instructor will take you through a proper warm up, show you modifications for the higher intensity moves and cool your body down after the workout.
Choose a supportive shoe for Zumba
Zumba involves a lot of ‘fancy’ foot work. From bouncing, to shuffling, to jumping – it’s a lot of work on your feet. Supportive shoes can decrease the potential for injury. Running shoes are great for running and even boot camp, but they may fall short when it comes to Zumba. A cross trainer shoe or shoes specifically designed for Zumba would be a better choice to protect your knees, shins and ankles when moving side to side.
Choose the right pace
Zumba can be loads of fun and a great way to burn calories. After all, “it’s a party”. Still, you want to keep in mind your current fitness level. Find a class plenty of room to move and pace yourself so you get the most out of your workout without overdoing it. It’s not a dance competition. No one is going to judge you if the person next to you is dancing more than you.
Most importantly, have fun! Zumba is not a boring workout – it’s just the opposite. At Bootique Fitness, our main goal for you is to enjoy working out so that you make fitness a natural part of your life. For many, that kind of enjoyment is found at Zumba.
