Outdoor Fitness in San Diego

Summer is just around the corner, if not here, and while we don’t need to remind you that that means swimsuit season, we will remind you of the endless opportunities to get your sweat on in the OUTDOORS. San Diego is blessed with sunshine most of the year round and the ability to skip the gym and hit the road, beach, or trails on any given day.

Here are a few of the many ways to get yourself swimsuit ready with outdoor fitness!

1.) Surfing – Where else in the US can you paddle waves in the middle of January? There are plenty of places for both experienced surfers and newbies. If you are just starting out, check out Groupon for great deals on lessons and be sure to hit up places like San Elijo and La Jolla Shores. The end of spring just may be the best time to learn since the waves are not as large and intimidating as other times of the year. Grab that wetsuit, get out there, and get those rock hard abs and killer arms you see surfer gals (and guys!) sporting around on the beach.

2.) Kayaking – Do you like water sports but prefer to be enclosed in some sort of water vehicle? (Shark phobias are a real thing people!) Kayaking is a great workout that targets your arms, core and back – some of the most sought after areas to tone up. La Jolla Cove is a great spot to do sea kayaking where you can literally paddle amongst seals, pelicans, or even whales and dolphins. If sea kayaking isn’t your thing, just head anyone else where water exists in San Diego and rent a kayak – you won’t be disappointed!

3.) Hiking – With so many amazing spots, it’s hard NOT to want to hike here. With numerous trails by the ocean, in the woods, and just straight up for killer views, you can truly never get bored with hiking in San Diego. Grab some friends and burn some serious calories. Hey, why not take it to the next level and hop on a mountain bike to conquer those trails?

4.) Rock Climbing – Want to get up the mountain or cliff a different way? Strap in and scale the side of it! Rock climbing is a crazy full-body workout, especially focused on your upper body. If you’re not comfortable with being outside, back facing a 100+ foot drop, rest assured that there are several indoor opportunities at facilities like The Solid Rock Gym and The Vertical Hold. If you are a beginner, definitely try an indoor facility first to get the feel of things. You’ll be a pro in no time.

5.) SUP – Stand Up Paddling is a relatively new way to workout. It combines the ocean, a surfboard, yoga type poses, and your own strength and balance and overall will give you a very effective and sunny workout.

Bootique Fitness is going on a Paddle Boarding adventure on Sunday, April 13th at 2:00 pm.

All are welcome – members and friends of Bootique. Mission Bay Sports Center (1010 Santa Clara Place).

6.) Outdoor Boot Camp Redefined  classes, Stair Workouts, Running, etc. – But you knew that already. 😉

Don’t forget about all the other interesting activities such as Kite Boarding, Snorkeling, Urban Biking, etc. The list doesn’t end. There are so many ways to get in shape for the San Diego summertime. You just have to want it bad enough. What are you waiting for? Go outside!
