Labor Day Weekend Fitness in San Diego
If Memorial Day is the official summer kick-off, then Labor Day is the official “last weekend” of summer.
What to do, what to do? Should you hit the beach one last time before the inevitable temperature drop? Should you have a party to celebrate and take advantage of the long weekend? Only you can decide what you’d like to do over the Labor Day holiday. However, no matter what you do, make it fun, interactive and, of course, fitness-focused. Here are some great tips on activities that you can do during that last-chance summer weekend that are fitness-friendly and fun.
1. Indoor Rock Climbing
You may think of Sylvester Stallone in “Cliffhanger” but I promise that indoor rock climbing is not that dramatic or dangerous. If you’ve never done it before, Labor Day weekend would be the perfect opportunity to try it. There are a few rock climbing gyms in San Diego and you don’t need to be a member of one in order to participate.
What are some of the benefits of rock climbing? Like the outdoor boot camps offered by Bootique Fitness, rock climbing provides a total body workout. Arms, legs, chest, core; all of those areas will be engaged while you’re trying to make it to the top of each trail. If you’re a beginner, don’t worry about the complexity of the rock walls because there are beginner climbing trails at most every rock climbing gym. This is definitely one way to get in a great workout without sacrificing the entire Labor Day weekend at the gym.
2. Hiking Trails
San Diego is one of the most scenic cities in the United States. Why not take advantage of the sites by hiking one of the local trails? From Lake Elsinore to Cowles Mountain, there are many different places to enjoy a challenging hike. Here are some tips to make your hiking trip a success:
a. Be sure to wear proper shoes.
If you’ve never hiked before, some cross-training tennis shoes should do the trick. There’s no need to purchase hiking shoes for your first one. However, be sure to wear fitness shoes and not causal shoes made by sports companies. Nike and New Balance offer great causal shoes to go with everyday wear and not just fitness wear. Those are not the shoes you want to hike in, though.
b. Bring a backpack with water, some first aid equipment and a light snack on you hike.
Hiking can be extremely exhausting if you don’t hydrate properly. Having some water and/or a sports drink (preferably both) on hand will help tremendously with hydration. Also, a light snack such as carrots, grapes, granola or anything healthy is a good idea. You can refuel once you reach your destination uphill. In the case of minor cuts and scrapes, it’s great to have some supplies such as band-aids, gauge and cleanser on hand.
c. Start early.
San Diego is known for cool, causal weather. However, the sun still shines bright and can make a hike unpleasant if you start too late in the day. While speaking about the sun, be sure to keep sunscreen with you and apply BEFORE you begin your hike to ensure maximum protection.
3. Check out our boot camp workout videos
The trainers at Bootique Fitness never leave you hanging over the holiday. They have recorded some videos that focus on everything from core work to sculpting legs and arms. Labor day signifies the ending of the summer season, but it doesn’t have to be the ending of your fitness season. By taking advantage of any one of the mentioned activities, you will be sure to keep in shape all year long. Happy Labor Day!
