It’s officially vacation season! And whether you are headed to a fabulous beach resort or an unforgettable site-seeing trip, it can be hard to stay on track with your healthy lifestyle when you are fully emerged in the food and festivities on your trip. But you can still enjoy yourself using these tips and tricks without totally going off the rails.

Give yourself permission

While it is important to stay consistent with your routine in order to stick to your goals, you can cut yourself a little slack. Go ahead and indulge in the delicious food and have a few cocktails. Vacations don’t last forever, and neither will your not-so-great food choices if you go in with the mindset that you are giving yourself permission to not be perfect. Before you leave home, make your healthy grocery list and tape it to the fridge. That way when you return home, you have your back-on-track plan easily accessible.

Walk it off

Walking is your weight loss secret weapon. If your destination is within a mile or two, ditch the car and lace up your sneakers. You will take in more of the sights on foot and you will burn extra calories as you go. Plus, you never know what unexpected treasure you will stumble upon on your walk when you would have just zoomed right by.

Pack some snacks

If you will be out and about all day, pack some healthy snacks. This way, when hunger inevitably strikes, you don’t have to run to the first drive thru or snack shack you see. Nuts, jerky and fruits are all great options that will stay fresh in your bag.

Get cooking

When you are booking your trip, look for a hotel room or condo that boasts a kitchen. With a kitchen on hand, you can cook a healthy breakfast before you head out each day. You can also hit up a local farmers market and buy ingredients to make a delicious, healthy dinner using local produce and artisan foods. Using these tactics will not only save you calories, they will also leave you with more vacation spending money in your pocket.

Pack your gym clothes

Most hotels these days have an onsite gym, so make sure you pack your workout clothes and carve out some time each day to get your sweat session in. No gym? No problem! Head to a local park or research some trails in the area. You will get so much more out of your trip when you explore the local great outdoors.
