Spotlight on Superfoods – Avocado

Living in California has a lot of perks. Seemingly endless sunshine, golden beaches and access to fresh produce pretty much year round. And luckily, one of our favorite fruits, the avocado, flourishes locally.

What makes avocado such a superfood?

Avocados, which are actually a berry that originally hails from South Central Mexico, are popular because of their buttery taste and texture. They are easy to eat and incorporate well into many of recipes. Avocados also fall into a category known as superfoods, foods that give a high quantity of nutrients and antioxidants which when eating them allows us to take advantage of the benefits.
Superfoods benefit our health from preventing illness and diseases to reducing dangerous elements all while reinforcing our immune system. Avocados are considered a superfood because it has many naturally occurring antioxidants and nutrients including folic acid, Omega 3, magnesium, potassium, lutein and fibre. Avocados are also rich in vitamins A, C, D, E, K and B Group. And if that’s not enough, they are also chock full of copper, manganese and iron.

Avocados sometimes get a bad rap because they are a high fat food, but the type of fat in avocados, monounsaturated fat, actually has been shown to reduce bad cholesterol and raise your good cholesterol.

These mighty fruits are actually a bit of an overachiever in the health department. In addition to it’s proven ability to lower bad cholesterol, it can also quell hunger pangs and help with weight loss. Just one scoop of guacamole can decrease your appetite for hours and it is so versatile, it can be served on your eggs, salads, grilled meat… it works on almost everything. Avocado Oil is also a great addition to any cook’s kitchen. Just swap your cooking oil with this or any other monounsaturated oil and reap the health benefits!

Avocados are also excellent for a pre-workout snack. Many supplements claim to give you the extra energy needed to sweat it out, but according to research, eating an avocado can provide the same energy boost, naturally. So next time you are headed to your Bootique Dance Fitness class, try munching on an avocado before heading out the door and enjoy that clean energy boost that keeps your metabolism burning, even after class.
