Is Dairy-Free the Way to Be?

You may have noticed that “dairy” is a hot topic lately, especially in relation to weight loss. Some argue that dairy is absolutely necessary to support weight loss because of the risk of losing bone. “If you have sufficient calcium intake during weight loss, that can reduce the impact on bone density,” says Susan Barr, Ph.D., R.D., a professor of nutrition at the University of British Columbia. But the Harvard University Nurses’ Health Study proves that dairy products offer no protection from bone fractures or osteoporosis, anyway.

Keep a Food Diary

If you choose to eliminate dairy (or anything else) from your diet, we recommend keeping a food diary to track everything you ate that day and how you felt. Did you have more energy? Did you sleep better the following night? Did you experience less mind fog? Did your skin feel less itchy? More clear? Or did you unexpectedly breakout? Over time, you may notice patterns linking the foods you’re eating to their effects on your body.

Try Dairy-Free Alternatives

With all this being said, there are some amazing alternatives out there if you decide to take the nondairy plunge. Ben & Jerry’s recently came out with a range of dairy-free flavors, Daiya makes vegan cheesecake along with a variety of vegan cheeses, even Trader Joe’s carries multiple types of vegan cheese. Almond milk has been a popular alternative to cow’s milk and coffee creamer (even popular among non-vegans). There is so much out there to experiment with that you can recreate almost any meal as dairy-free.

Just remember that only you will be able to determine if something is right for your body. What works for someone else may not work for you and vice versa. It’s also a good idea to discuss dairy elimination with your primary doctor or a nutritionist.
