The unofficial end of summer is upon us. Labor Day weekend is a time to relax and have fun with friends and family, but with all the parties and BBQ’s, it can be a struggle to stay on top of your healthy eating plan.

But there is a way to indulge in the food and fun while keeping your waistline in check. Here are five ways to avoid derailing your diet this holiday weekend.

Choose your booze carefully

Skip the Bloody Mary bar and avoid fruity cocktail concoctions. Instead, opt for simple drinks like vodka with soda water and a splash of fresh lime juice. One ounce of vodka has about 65 calories, so as long as you keep your cocktail intake to a minimum, you can still indulge. Another trick is to alternate every other alcoholic beverage with sparkling water. The bubbles in sparkling water gives you the feeling of having a drink without any guilt.

Scope before your scoop

Instead of running down the buffet line piling everything in sight onto your plate, take a moment and scan the items on the table. Choose what you are going to take before you pick up your plate. This method can slash tons of calories because you avoid overflowing your plate with items you may not really want.

Focus on what you can control

By focusing on what you are personally accountable for, you can breeze through the weekend feeling empowered. If you know you are going to a BBQ with tons of unhealthy food, have a healthy meal or snack before you go. This will help rein in hunger and enable you to make healthier food choices. On the other hand, if you know you are going to overindulge, get in a good workout in the morning and make an effort to stay a little more active throughout the weekend.

Don’t skip meals

If you think you are going to save calories by skipping breakfast and lunch so you can treat yourself later, think again. The only thing this will accomplish is to give you less willpower when confronted with all the tasty treats. You will be so ravenous at the first sight of food that you stack your plate high and set yourself up for failure. Instead, opt for smaller meals through the day to maintain your blood sugar until the big bash.

Pass on food you aren’t passionate about

If you’ve ever been standing at the snack table and just started eating something because it was in front of you, you aren’t alone. If it’s not something you really love or a special treat you don’t have all the time, don’t waste the calories. Eat the things you don’t normally indulge in, like brats or brownies, and skip the items that you feel just so-so about.

Move just for the fun of it

In San Diego, boot camp and dance fitness classes are available on Saturday. Whether you opt for a complete workout or not, just get up and move around. Chase a frisbee or a kid, go for a bike ride or a swim. Enjoy that you have the ability to move your body and get to it!
